Thank you for featuring Phil's illustration of "Ice Delivery" in the 1940s.

Artist's Description

Before air conditioning and refrigerators with ice makers existed, all ice was delivered by horse drawn wagons. The men would unload large blocks of ice on the sidewalks. Then each family would come down from their apartments and he would fill their requests. You would hear, Ill take a quarter of a block. or sometimes half a block or more.

I remember our family ordering a quarter block of ice for 25 cents. One man would chop the ice with an ice pick. The other man would place a burlap bag on his shoulder where he would place the ice to carry it up two flights upstairs and place in our ice box for us.

Philip And Robbie Bracco

About Robbie and Philip Bracco Phil and I love to do things in the outdoors in all kinds of weather. Almost every day one can find us somewhere in Central Florida, shooting birds and other natural scenes we come upon. We also love sub-zero temperatures in our countries National Parks. At home, we always have the TV on with National Graphic or PBS or any other ones we happen to see. We are both in our 80s and have done so many things in our active life that I won't even begin to tell you what they are but we do invite you to visit our website and discover some of the things which life has granted us. The rewards we get from our Robbie Bracco online exposure are not money but to see what other beautiful talented young people like our...
