This small bird, Wilson's Snipe, can fit in the palm of your hand and can be seen in Central Florida occasionally except for the spring. This is the first one I have ever seen. It was very close to me, so I got a good shot!
Using a methodical approach, Wilson's Snipe search for earthworms and other invertebrates in the mucky ground. Similar to a sewing machine running at a slow speed, their heads move up and down. They usually remain until suddenly flying off in a fast weave near your feet. When the air passes over the modified outer tail feathers of the males, they make a curious whistling sound.
